Nebraska Partnerships in Character Education Grant
Nebraska Partnerships in Character Education Grant
In October 2000, the Nebraska Department of Education received a five-year Partnerships in Character Education Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This state-wide project addresses the need for Character Education in Nebraska schools enabling students to 1) reach the goals of Character Education, 2) achieve State Standard and Links to LEARNS (Leading Educational Achievement Trough Rigorous Nebraska Standards) that address character education, and 3) display the positive character behaviors needed to become upright, contributing adults.
The project has been undertaken by a consortium led by the Nebraska Department of Education and includes the University of Nebraska 4-H Cooperative Extension, four geographically and demographically diverse school districts (Arthur County High School, York Public Schools, Hartington Public Schools, and Lincoln Public Schools ), and the Nebraska Educational Service Units located throughout the state.
Three major goals have been established through this project:
1. Design and implement a statewide network to support the implementation of
K-12 Character Education programs across Nebraska.
Specific objectives of this goal include revising and enhancing the Nebraska Character Education guidelines to reflect the State Standards and give schools and teachers direction in integrating character education into current curriculum. A state-wide clearinghouse for
programs, model curricula, materials and resources will be established to support teachers in their efforts and staff development will be available to the four pilot schools as well as other interested schools across the state.
2. Develop the capacity of Nebraska educators and community members to
effectively implement character education programs in their communities.
The support, resources, and training opportunities provided through the Partnerships in
Character Education Project will enable school communities to develop community-wide Character Education coalitions that complement each school-based program.
3. Enable students in Nebraska schools to meet State Standards and Links to
LEARNS related to character education and to display an increase in
positive character behaviors.
Through this Project, specific academic standards will be identified (especially in the areas
of Social Studies/History, Family and Consumer Sciences and Guidance) and appropriate
assessments strategies will be developed.
