Linocuts
Fifth grade students at Belmont had the opportunity to create linoleum prints. This involved the creation of a master plate from which multiple images were made. Before we started our linocuts we studied the art of Ake Lianga, a printmaking artist from the Solomon Islands. After our study, students created several sketches from which to create a final plate.
Once they chose a design, the students drew the image onto a black piece of construction paper with white chalk. This helped them to understand what the image would look like when printed. Then they laid the chalk drawing [which is the exact same size as the plate] onto the linoleum. The students used spoons to rub the chalk image on the plate, creating a reverse image ready to cut. The artists prepared the printing plate by cutting the image onto the plate using special chisel-like tools. Students rolled ink onto the plate using a brayer. Next paper was pressed onto the plate through a hand-cranked printing press. The finished print was pulled from the plate and set out to dry.
Please take some time to see our students work.
