Les Jeux Olympiques!

Welcome to French class!

Many students wonder why should one learn French? If you've been watching the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, you've been hearing everything announced in the 3 "Official Languages" of international sport and the Olympics: French, English and the language of the host country - in this case, Chinese.

Here are just a few pictures from the 2008 Olympics:

Michael Phelps of the USA broke Mark Spitz' 1972 record of 7 gold medals in one Olympics.

Michael now has 8!

But he hasn't done it alone. The US team, including Michael Phelps, just barely beat out the French team for the 100 meter relay.

In the first week, the US men won the bronze medal in the cycling time trial!

The US took numerous medals in Track and Field. Here are just a couple of them:

Not too unexpectedly, the Williams sisters won gold in tennis!

The US men's basketball team worked their way to the finals.

They finally beat SPAIN for gold - the "Redeem Team"!

The US women's basketball team also won gold for the 4th time!

Lisa Leslie has been part of ALL 4 gold medal games!

In gymnastics, the women's Team took the silver medal and Nastia Liukin and Shawn won gold and silver in the overall women's competition!

Jonathan Horton wins silver on horizontal bars.

Both US women's AND men's beach volleyball won gold!! That has never happened before in Olympic history.

After starting with a personal tragedy in Beijing for the coach's family, the US men's volleyball team worked hard to win.

But they DID win a very hard fought and EXCITING finish against Brazil!

So the 2008 Olympics came to an end in a big way, handing the Summer Olympic torch to London in 2012:
