Instrumental Music Curriculum

Grade 6
Students continue weekly lessons meeting in groups of 4-6 students of like instruments for 52 minute lessons.
Basic musical concepts are expanded. Students work to expand range to include 7 major scales Students are re-introduced to music theory concepts as well. There are over sixty 6th band students involved as well as a dozen 6th grade string students playing. Students perform concerts each semester as well as all-city events.
Grade 7
7th grade students meet as a class everyday for 52 minutes. 7th grade bands students are divided into two classes: brass & percussion and woodwinds. 7th & 8th grade string students meet together as a class everyday as well.
Students work to achieve proficiency on their instruments by working in all 12 major keys. Students are graded on practice and progress. They are exposed to music theory and musical concepts in much greater depth, Students are encouraged to begin thinking about what role they want music to play in their lives and what it will take to make it that way. Students are also encouraged to learn how to learn in order to make even more musical progress. Students may also choose to have their first jazz ensemble experience.
Grade 8
8th grade students continue developing and refining their musical skills and concepts working regularly in all 12 keys in both major & minor modes. Blues scales are also introduced along with more in depth jazz studies. Students work to develop their musicianship by working to develop musical lines or phrases in their playing. We work to build confidence in their playing abilities and explore post middle school musical opportunities.
