Helpful tips to learning languages:

• Make time on a regular basis for your language learning.  Little and often is best-15 minutes a day is better than marathon cramming sessions.
• Create a routine.  Try spending time online at lunch reading authentic materials or doing online exercises.  Listen to music when possible. Here is a great example by John and Sarah.
• Be realistic.  Language learning takes time and commitment- don't expect to become fluent overnight. 
• Set short-term goals.  Planning even a short trip to the country where your language is spoken can be really motivating, even just having contacts in that country. 
• Don't try and do too much at once.  Allow time for review and repetition.  Make sure you have full concentration.
• Don't fret over making mistakes.  It's part of the learning process and as long as you learn as a result, that's the point.  It's better to speak and make mistakes than to wait and only speak when it's perfect.
• Improve accent and confidence by utilizing contact with native speakers.  Listen to music, online news reports and T.V. when possible.  When unsure, ask your teacher or German foreign exchange students with pronunciation questions.
• Check your progress.  If you feel like you haven't learned much, look back and be surprised at how much you've retained.
• Utilize language opportunities. Join the German Club at East High. Expand your contacts with other students of German.
• Exploit your preferred learning style.  Find out what works best for you and modify assignments and study habits accordingly.  Don't be afraid to try other styles as well, but know what yours is.
• Try and memorize new information without English translations. 
• Don't underestimate the value of learning language.  You never know where your experiences and knowledge will take you someday.  It's well worth the effort!!!
