Deutsch 2   Frau Wegner   Schuljahr 2008-2009

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of German I is recommended for entrance to this course.  In addition, a serious commitment to practicing and improving your language skills is required.

Course Goals:  The goals are two-fold:

1) To develop language proficiency (usage) as you continue to develop your language skills.  This course emphasizes what you can "do" with the language, instead of what you know 'about' the language.  This is important to your long term retention of German (based upon research in second language acquisition), and it is also what makes this course fun.

2)  To develop a greater appreciation of the German speaking culture.

Instructional Strategies:  Learners will be actively engaged in a variety of communicative strategies, including but not limited to the following:  speaking with other students in German every day; doing role plays: using music to learn: using actions to learn: task-based cooperative learning activities, and multi-media projects.  German is the primary language used in the classroom for routine procedures.

Recommended Materials for success in this class:

A 1 1/2" binder with index tabs.  A German-English paperback dictionary is optional, but not required if you prefer to use one of several good online dictionaries.

Classroom Performance:  In order to do well in this course you must be present, prompt, and prepared!  I expect your Personal Best at all times, and you may expect that of me.  Keeping up daily with your assignments and practicing speaking is essential.  Homework is carefully planned as an extension of your class work and as further enhacement of your language skills.  Coming to class with homework completed, as well as positively participating in class, is very important.  Both will directly impact and improve your grade.  How?  You will be better prepared for tests and quizzes, and your homework will be part of your semester grade. Be prepared at any time for your homework assignments to be graded.  A homework accountability system is used to chart the homework you complete daily. Cramming does not work in this class;  keeping up daily will help you get more out of each class period.  To be an effective language learner, you need to create ways to practice speaking outside of class.  (Übung macht den Meister!)

Extra Credit:  Frequently extra credit points are offered during class time.  These are awarded for exceptional performance in class.

Attendance:  If your absence is excused, you will have the number of days you missed to make up your work without any reduction in grade.  If your absence is unexcused, see 'Grades' below.  Every third tardy will earn you a detention.  'Tardy' is defined as not in your desk when the bell rings.

Grades:  A variety of performance strategies will be used to assess your usage of the language. Missing class will impact the development of your German language skills, so be conscientious about making up your work.  Any test, quiz, or graded activity administered while you are truant (unexcused absence) will be graded according to the school policy:  the highest possible grade for that work is the lowest passing grade (65%).

Cheating of any kind is not tolerated and results in a grade of "0" on that task and a phone call to your parents.  The following scale is used:

97 -100%  =  A+      92 - 96% =  A         88 - 91%  =   B+

83 - 87%   =  B        79 - 82%  =  C+      74 - 78%  =  C

70 - 73%   =  D+      65 - 69%  =   D       0 - 64%  =   F

A weighted system of grading is used:  20% of your grade is from Formative Assessments and 80% are from Summative Assessments. Examples of Formative Assessments are:  daily assignments, various speaking tasks, guided writing and internet practice exercises.  Examples of Summative Assessments are:  written tests,  quizzes and essays (reading and  writing skills) and performance assessments (speaking and listening skills)

Make-up Work:   When you return from an absence of any kind, please follow this procedure:

1)  To find out what you missed, check with me in Room B226 between 7:30 and 7:50 am.  Also, turn in all of your work which was due during your absence.

2)  If you need to make up speaking/listening activities, please see me after class to schedule an appointment.

Expected Classroom Behaviors:    You are responsible for your behavior.  We follow Dr. Marvin Marshall's plan which is called 'The Raise Responsibility System'.  This system encourages all of us to raise our level of internal motivation to do our Personal Best.

Also note:  Please bring only bottled water (no soft drinks, juice, or food - except on a designated food day) to class.

Fragen?  Vor und nach der Schule bin ich im Zimmer B226.  Wenn du Fragen hast, such mich und sprich mit mir!  Ich freue mich sehr auf das neue Schuljahr!  Alles Gute!
