fourth grade
Fourth grade students are becoming skilled at rendering the human figure both two and three dimensionally! They are using a wide variety of art materials as they practice creating the human figure.
One of the first skills, and one of the more challenging, was creating the human figure in the correct proportions. This skill involves math and the transfer of information from one scale to another! Students began their exploration two dimensionally. In the second quarter they moved their work from 2-D to three dimensional sculptures. As the sculptures are completed, they are being displayed in the hallway of the lower level and will be sent home at the conclusion of the quarter.
Students employ the five steps of the creative process - the first of the LPS core abilities - as they create thumbnail sketches for their human figure sculptures.
The third core ability is addressed as students make choices regarding the activity of their sculpture. The sculpture is required to be a figure in motion. The form expresses the action. The color applied to the figure also communicates the action. This process allows students to also address the fourth LPS core ability - Know the Language of Art.
Every day of this unit, students are involved in creating the human figure, each day exploring new materials and thus developing new skills or building on existing skills. This is the fifth of the core abilities.
At the beginning of the unit of study, we explore the advantages to developing the skill of rendering the human figure. We also discuss careers where the rendering of the human figure is important. This is the sixth of the core abilities.
Students are encouraged to talk about their work as they create. Because this is a skill that we have worked on since kindergarten - talking about your artwork - students engage in this process naturally. The discussion of one's artwork is an ongoing process. Students have learned to respond respectfully to the artwork of others. Talkiing About Art is the seventh of the core abilities.
