third grade
Elliott thrid graders embark on a project that takes the better part of three quarters to complete! This will be the third year for the author and illustrators project. Every third grader creates their own book. this project involves much more than writing a story and then illustrating it. Students experience the entire process of creating a storybook. The five steps of the creative process are heavily explored. Students work simultaneously on the development of their story and their illustrations.
In the first quarter students focus on generating ideas for a storyline and the development of the characters that might appear in their book. the second quarter involves the creation of a storyboard, complete with illustration sketches and the beginning of the text part of their book. Students make changes throughout the process, as they see fit. The third quarter, students will create the pages that will become their book. Students are invited to submit their creations to the Reading Rainbow Young Authors and Illustrators contest but must return parent/guardian permission forms to do so.
Throughout this process students get a taste of the professional side of the life of an artist. Meeting deadlines, turning on your imagination, employing the storyboard, sharing and defending your work and of course the more rewarding aspects of expressing ideas and making art!
During the length of the project, students are engaged in each of the seven LPS core abilities. The Language of Art is focused on more in the third quarter during the creation of the actual illustrations. We will talk about emphasis, balance, space and color more so than the other elements and principles.
