KINDERGARTEN
My philosophy about educating children in the visual arts is that the first step is to orientate students to materials. Before children learn about principles and elements, they must first have some experience in using, manipulating, and caring for, materials commonly used in the visual arts setting.
This quarter students are talking about the many different structures used by people for living, working, worshipping and playing. Students will talk about structures from the past and the present. The discussions will include possible uses for structures, whether the structures are real or make-believe, and what the structures are built with. Students will build and draw structures of their own. Students will also learn what bricks are made from and how they are made. They will cut their own bricks from clay and use them to build a structure of their own design. Kindergarten students will also have the opportunity to use sticks to build a structure, which they will then be able to paint. In the process of building using materials similar to what real structures are made form, students will discover some of the challenges of building and therefore create some solutions to the problems!
