FIRST GRADE
First graders begin their art experience by studying a familiar author and illustrator, Eric Carle. Through the study of this artist, children are able to make connections to something that is familiar to them. Students experience the complicated process of Eric Carle's illustration method from start to finish. The process involves generating ideas about illustrations, selecting an idea, making improvements on the idea and then using six steps to arrive at the final work of art! They are very successful and access their creative process efficiently.
In the second quarter first graders move to a more three dimensional form of art. We study the development of architecture throughout time. Students learn specific architectural terms and the names of some of our world's most common architectural structures. Following a study of reality, we take a look at uses for fantasy architecture. Children are encouraged to design structures of their own and then create the structures out of a variety of materials. We also work on drawing what we see in terms of structures students create and creating structures we have drawn!
First graders are busy thinking, creating and building!
In the third quarter, first grade will be integrating clay into their study of structures. Students will cut clay into bricks and construct a building using their bricks. In this way they can begin to learn to use clay in way they are already familiar with in the art environment. The skills used in brick buildings is practice and will take us into a unit on clay art forms. We will look at functional and non-functional clay pieces. Students will create a piece of work from clay, incorporating pattern and texture. Students will have the opportunity to use several instruments designed specifically for use in working with clay.
